Bizarre Starting Issue

Tony...Not clear whether the lights stopped flashing when battery was charged.  The start and stall sounds like either the battery has an open (dead cell) or the voltage is low for some reason.  Loose or dirty cable connections can be a problem.  Low alternator output is trouble...A Jeep XJ, MJ or ZJ has EFI/MPI, and the system will not work with less than 12.4V.  The stalling could be a defective battery or bad connections—or low alternator output, which can be checked with a simple voltmeter.  We can discuss how to do this safely if you do it yourself.

Take the battery to AutoZone or NAPA for a free check-up.  The battery may have an open and will not perform properly.  Running a battery this low can also allow freezing and cell damage in icy weather.  Also, the high rate of charge on a dead or low battery after startup can damage the battery as well.  I use the time-honored Battery Tender on my Ram truck and XJ Cherokee.  The batteries are always at full-charge when starting and do not require a major outpouring of alternator amperage to charge.
