AX-15 Part Sourcing

Recommended Posts

Been following the AX-15 rebuild video on Vimeo. This video is great and I appreciate you taking the time to put it together.

The only issues I've been having with the rebuild is having the required parts on hand. Aside from the Crown rebuild kit missing a few parts (2nd gear bearing, 5th gear synchronizer and retaining ring), I'm having trouble sourcing a couple other replacement parts that seem to be discontinued and wonder if you could point me in the right direction (note: I haven't tried the dealership yet and will be calling them in the morning, so please forgive me if that is the answer):

- Reverse Restrict Pin (Item 22 in the following diagram). I'm pretty sure the previous owner removed this, but there is a chance that it fell out at in the part washer at the machine shop I took the housing to for cleaning. We fished around with a magnet for a while, but didn't come up with it (as a tip, get one of these from Home Depot next time you have this problem... I had one around to search for nails after a roofing project). Could the transmission be reassembled without this part at the expense of not having the lockout between 5th and Reverse?
- Reverse shift head lock ball spring (Item 27 on the following diagram). It had corroded and split in two pieces when I removed it. I measured the spring constant at work and approximated the length and diameter so I could find a suitable replacement from McMaster. I would prefer to not screw around and get a factory one if available.

Please let me know if you have any ideas for sourcing these parts.

Hi, Matt...Thanks for the feedback on the HD video how-to covering the AX15 rebuild...You do need this restrictor pin.  It may not be a dealer item, and a transmission shop that has several AX15 cores around might be willing to part with the piece.  Advance Adapters is direct for Aisin on new AX15 transmissions.  They may have a parts core around or spare pieces.  It's worth calling Advance Adapters tech support at 1-800-350-2223.

As for ball bearings, McMaster-Carr and MSC are each good sources.  I have used MSC parts that are graded for bearing use and have proper metallurgy.  (I'm fortunate to have MSC at our doorstep, the Reno/Fernley Western Distribution Center).  MSC offers various grade bearings in both metric and U.S. diameters.  Here is a typical high quality ball bearing for your kind of application.  You'll need to determine the sizing/diameter by measuring the spring and ball bore:   https://www.mscdirect.com/product/details/00073148?item=00073148

I happened to use the 8mm example, you need to measure the bore and determine the ball bearing needed.  (Here is the catalog listing page for buying the correct diameter, see the lower left for "chrome metric" balls: https://www.mscdirect.com/browse/tn/Raw-Materials/Metals/Steel/Steel-Balls?navid=12102050&rdrct=Steel+Balls.)  Note that these are not the "economical" bearings despite the inexpensive price.

You want Grade 25 chromium ("chrome") and through hardened.  Note the Rockwell hardness and spherical accuracy here.  These bearings would run true in machined bearing applications when fitted against hard parts.  For a simpler detent ball in an aluminum alloy bore, you would be very pleased with this quality.  It will be compatible with the hardened rail.

Let us know whether you find the restrictor pin...

Hey Moses,

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately Advanced Adapters doesn't sell parts such as this, nor would my local transmission shop part with the reverse restrictor pin. Fortunately Jeen from Stork Plows responded to my ebay message today and is sending on my way (along with the short spring I couldn't find). With a little luck, it will be here by the weekend and everything will work out. Thanks again!

Matt
