E4OD only moves in drive and reverse

Recommended Posts

95 f 150 xlt with a 5.8 l v-8...tranny was kinda slipping, had to manually shift it even tho it was auto, taking off in drive was just too sluggish sluggish to move...lost 1st and 2nd (might as well say we lost all gears cause u cant take off in drive) so all thats left is drive and reverse...changed fluid, no metal shavings or chunks but was def. burnt but new fluid and filter made no changes in it.....help

cindal...When you share that the truck only moves in Drive and Reverse, what do those two gear positions feel like?  Is the transmission slipping in those gearshift positions?

Burnt fluid is always a negative sign.  This happens from slippage of friction materials, which indicates wear of the friction discs, steel plates and related parts.  Slipping and slow engagement have already torn at the frictions.  Was there a lot of friction debris in the pan when you changed the fluid and filter?  Was the filter clogged with friction material?

cindal...This sounds like a shift control issue or lack of hydraulic pressure, which can have a variety of causes.  You eliminated the clogged oil filter.  It would have been great if this solved the problem, but it did not.

Other causes of low hydraulic apply pressure include:

1) Damaged or mis-adjusted shift linkage that does not allow full gear engagement at the valve body.

2)  Improper fluid pressure, which can be checked at the fluid test ports of the transmission.

3)  Pump inlet filter is clogged or blocking the pump flow; inlet O-ring is damaged or missing.

4)  Any kind of fluid bleed-off at the valve body or manual valve in the valve body.

5)  A damaged forward clutch assembly or any parts related to the forward clutch.

6)  Output shaft damage or spline damage on the output shaft or the driveshaft's splined coupler.

7)   Damaged low/one-way clutch assembly.

These are each significant problems; all except a defective driveshaft spline coupler require a transmission rebuild.  Before removing and rebuilding the transmission, however, I would run line pressure and individual test port gear pressure tests in each of the shift positions.  The stall speed test cannot be run if the clutches are slipping, so do not run a stall test unless you're certain the line and gear port pressures are normal.  The air checks would be the last tests short of removing the transmission for a rebuild.  Easy fixes would be the gearshift and shift control related problems.  Other issues beyond the driveshaft coupler require transmission removal.  Here are the guidelines for the overall line pressure test, the port pressure tests, stall test and air checks:

Trust this helps...If you share test results, we can break this down further.  Also, you may be able to pick up trouble codes from the ECU/TCM.  Please share them.
