Administrators Moses Ludel Posted June 12, 2017 Administrators Share Posted June 12, 2017 The traditional use of ATF in the power steering system was no longer recommended by the time your 1997 Jeep TJ Wrangler came to market. Manufacturers moved to power steering fluid (designated and labeled as such); Jeep turned to Mopar® Power Steering Fluid "or equivalent". These contemporary power steering fluids are typically clear, which will help with your flushing process and noting whether all of the debris and contaminated fluid has been purged. You will discover that motor supply/auto parts stores now sell "Power Steering Fluid" as a specific, packaged product. If high quality and compatible with Mopar Power Steering Fluid, you can substitute other brands of power steering fluid if desired. ATF+4 is expensive compared to power steering fluid, and an ATF is not recommended. Stick with a quality power steering fluid.
