  1. I don't really like new Jeeps, but I'm considering a Liberty to have a more reliable car for winter and sports driving. I have seen a lot of locals for sale cheap with bad engines. I'm talking $300.00 - $400.00 cheap. Is the 3.7L a dud or are we looking at something else, like poor maintenance? Also, is there any lift for these little girls?
  2. We recently received a recall notice for my wife's '06 Libby. The problem is that the fuel tank could leak during a rear-end collision (ya think?!), and the fix is to install a trailer hitch. I thought that was an interesting fix, but I sure won't complain about a free OEM hitch! It also noted that parts are not currently available, but that we'll receive another notice when they are. Can you imagine how many hitches Chrysler will need for all the '02-'07 KJs on the road??
  3. Jeep Liberty 3.7L 4x4 - 42RLE Hi everyone, I've read through many posts regarding KJ driveline issues but could not find one that matched my symptoms. Bought the KJ at a city auction so I dont have any history of how it was driven or repairs done prior. While driving it home the rear axle was whining for cheese and after all said and done the rear pionion bearing race was bad (missing 1" of chorme plating) and someone (other than me) had worked on the differential along with assembling it incorrectly. Final tally for rear axle - new locker differential (old diff case was badly scarred, broken axle gear teeth, worm gear seats worn), new bearings throughout, shimmed pinion so now drive and coast patterns are good (other mechanic did not install any shims). set clearances and torques, all better now. The problem i am really trying to fix is the binding in reverse. This I discovered while first trying to get the Jeep to move. - the car acts normal in drive (2wd) but has the whirring/grind noise (like parking pawl is just barely engaged) when in reverse the car will move normal but for only 1ft, after that the whirring/grind noise (like parking pawl is just barely engaged) then the transmission binds up similar to applying the brakes, when this happens i have to raise engine rpms above 1300rpm to get it moving again. As soon as I let off the gas the car stops like I applied the brakes. I was hoping the rear axle repairs would resolve this but it has not made a difference. video for your viewing pleasure https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkFZb2AJEU8&feature=youtu.be 2004 Jeep LIberty NP231 Noise - YouTube I was thinking its something in the transfer case but after removing t-case and while it's laying on the ground the symptoms have not dimished nor changed.. still binding. I am certain it's in the transmission but am hoping someone can shed some light as to what might be happening. Any and all help is appreciated.
  4. The Jeep Liberty, Commander and Patriot have a loyal following. We bought the first year KJ Liberty model introduced in 2002 and were impressed with its content. Familiar with the XJ Cherokee, I knew immediately that the Liberty offered substance and way more technology than its predecessor. Each of these three Jeep 4WD models have more technology than a TJ or YJ Wrangler or the XJ Cherokee. The service needs are also greater and should follow OEM guidelines...If you have a need for answers and want to dialogue with other owners, this is the place! Better yet, I'll throw my professional card into the mix and offer researched, technical answers to your concerns. There are many Liberty vehicles now available in the used marketplace, and that number will swell. There is an aftermarket for upgrades and off-pavement modifications...The Liberty, in particular, has an off-road propensity, as many have discovered. Built properly, a Liberty can negotiate—and survive—rougher off-pavement use. As the price of admission to Jeep KJ Liberty ownership continues to drop, buyer interest and aftermarket support for off-pavement use will increase—just as it did with the XJ Cherokee. When many speculated that the XJ Cherokee's doors would likely bind from twisting the uni-body in off-pavement use, owners defied that challenge and did it anyway. And guess what? Few XJ Cherokee doors ever did bind, it takes a huge amount of abuse to tweak a uni-body chassis. This will be even more true with the Liberty—and Commander. Find out how your Liberty or Commander can survive off-pavement punishment—join this forum and post your topics and replies! Moses
  5. Welcome to the Jeep Liberty, Commander, Patriot and Compass forum! The Liberty served as the sequel to the XJ Cherokee, followed by the Commander, Patriot and Compass Jeep® models. Liberty went on to distinguish itself as a 4x4 off-road contender, and the Commander met the same aims as the 2005-up Jeep® Grand Cherokee. Join other owners at this community and share your experiences!—Moses Ludel The 2002 Jeep® KJ Liberty automatic transmission is just one more example of the stamina built into these 4WD SUV models. Liberty, in particular, has become another Jeep 4x4 icon!
