So I picked up a 2004 XJ 4.0 engine and didn't realize the many differences in the block casting from the older 4.0. It wasn't until I started doing more research on the engine that I realized this, but I did get the engine for a really good price that was too good to pass up. Being that I've already put in some time into this engine, I HAVE to make it work. The first issue that I ran into was with the driver's side motor mount pads on the block. on the older 4.2 and 4.0 engine, the top bolt pad is pushed back about half an inch, and on the XJ 4.0 they are flush with each other. So, I went ahead and cut the top one off about 1/2" and that left enough thread for the bolt. There is some space between the mounting plate and the block, but not much, that I am going to use washers. I'm hoping that will work. For the passenger side, I had to do some cutting on the CJ7 motor mount brackets and a bit on the block due to block webbing interference. Now, the next issue that I am facing is with serpentine accessory drive. I wish that I could just use the 4.0 accessories, but being that I did not get the harness and computer with the replacement 4.0, I am going with the carb setup. So I will be using the 4.2 intake. Unfortunately, the water pumps are different. The older 4.0 engines have the built-in power steering bracket on the pump, so it's not like I could go this route to solve my power steering issues. This is starting to be somewhat of a headache because it is turning out to be a much more involved swap than I thought. I wish that I could just go the fuel injection route and be done with these issues. This would allow me to use all 4.0 accessories without an issue.

My Jeepster has the 225/3 spd and everything works quite well. However, to modernize it a bit and make it easier to drive for my wife, I scrounged up a 1984 Cutlass with a 3.8, and a 700R4/208. I also have (still on the truck) a 1991 Chevy 350 with TBI. My plan is to rebuild the 3.8 with buick 3.0 pistons and the Melling MTB1 cam. Add the TBI for easy starts and efficiency. The 700R4 is for my wifes bad knees. Any suggestions?

Moses, I am energized by your projects/knowledge and want some advice which I think will be simple for you. I have an 86 CJ-7 since 90. 4.2, 5-speed, Dana 44 rear, A/C, 4” lift, Xfer lowered, 4.10 gears, ltd slip front. 38,000 miles. Parked/stored 98-2010 until retired from Army. Then Mom drove Florida to Texas on low/no oil. Heard her coming before I saw her. Broke my heart and I put it in the barn. Engine still ran with knocking sound. The obvious question… What do you recommend?

1956 Willys CJ3B Rebuild and Restoration
Mike House posted a topic in Vintage Jeep® Vehicles 1941-71
It has taken me nearly 35 years from the moment I fell in love with the willys jeep to finally buy a project Willys and build one for myself! Recently while browsing craigslist I found an add for a 1950s cj3b for $1,500. The pics made it look like a minor rebuild project but of course the guy I got it from did not know much of the history of the jeep. He told me it was half 3b and half M38..... I bought the jeep and trailered it home. After several weeks of soaking the cylinders I was still unable to get the F head 4 cylinder freed up. For the next few weeks I did research on an engine upgrade and settled on a late 90's GM v6 with TBI. While trying to find the right deal on an engine I stumbled across a guy selling jeep parts and turned out he had a Dauntless V6 still sitting in a 1967 CJ5. I bought the engine, flywheel and bellhousing for $400. This engine was also seized up as it had been sitting in a field for several years. I got the engine home and tore it down to the block. The cylinder walls were scored and worn but the block, crank and heads seemed salvable so the block, crank and head went to the machine shop. The body is in very rough shape. If I had the tools and shop space I would probably rebuild/repair the body. Still undecided on the path forward with the body. Other than I pulled it off and striped the frame down. Pulled the T90 and Dana 18 apart and found the transfer case to be in good shape but the transmission was a basket case. I have since rebuilt the transmission and bolted it back up to the transfer case awaiting the motor from the machine shop. I plan to couple the Dauntless V6 to the T90. This will not be a hwy vehicle or a performance vehicle so for now I will stick with this drive train. I found the frame broken just behind left front spring shackle so I repaired the break and fish plated the outside of the frame. And that is where I am at to this point.- 167 replies

Looks like CJ stock steel fuel line is 5/16 inch. 4.0 fuel rail is 3/8 inch connection. Is there any need to install 3/8 fuel supply tube even though the stock tank nipple is probably 5/16? I am going to run external pump.

I recently ordered you book Jeep cj rebuilder's manual. It is due to arrive June 21. I am putting a 1994 yj 4.0 engine into my 1982 cj8. I did this about 20 yrs ago and used hesco harness. They don’t offer this any more but it looks like I can order one from mopar performance with the same part number p5007148 as the old hesco number. Would you have any idea if they are the same. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Bill Himelright

I stumbled onto this forum while researching my 68 Jeepster Commando rebuild. What a great bunch of folks, thanks! I currently have a 225 v6, running good, but stock. I've built and added bumpers, winch, rock sliders etc. so with all that and tools its gained a bit. Also running 33" tires, 4:56 gears with a SM 465 and Dana 20. My dilemma is should I rebuild the 225 (which is my first inclination) or try to find an EF 231? So far my plans for either one would be a stock rebuild but with Comp 252H cam, Offy dual plane intake with EFI and dual exhaust. I want to stick with either the 225 or 231 because I want to just drop one in, and I've been working on this for long enough. I would like more low and mid range power. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Scott

So the engine in my 1990 wrangler has gone over hill. The cylinders are scored and they are already bored .060 over. A good friend of mine has found a 1998 engine still assembled (it was removed because the owner put a bigger engine in). It also has the 5 speed transmission if I'm not mistaken the ax5 and transfer case with it. its quite a deal, but my question is would the block be able to fit in the 1990 wrangler? If I get parts for it would I need 1998?
