Jeep with Scout II Powertrain a Mystery

Recommended Posts

Howdy,

We've got a driveline from an 80 Scout in an old CJ. The engine is toast.  The engine was International's diesel option at the time. To be specific, an SD33T Nissan bolted up to a T19 w/T300 transfer.

no one and I keep on asking - knows what other engine on this planet (gasoline ok / diesel preferred) may bolt up with relative ease. Granted some mounts may need fabricatiing... possible other minor issues. Yet its all now in an '86 CJ and really cant afford a new engine let alone a new tranny etc and having to modify the shafts etc......

it's a nighmare - hard to explain but if you or, you know of anyone that has some answers I think I'll just about cry for joy.

thanks

'bloo...Not as bleak as it might seem.  First-off, there are the I-H V-8 prospects, the 304, 345 or 392 I-H engines.  These are heavy but make a lot of torque.  (Don't confuse the I-H 304 with the AMC 304 that was stock in the Jeep CJs.)  I-H fuel efficiency is consist:  12-14 mpg no matter what the load!

The other approach is a Jeep 258 six, which Scout II also used, much to your advantage.  You would need a bellhousing that bolts to a T19, from a rarer Scout II with a six.  (Try a Scout parts source for this bellhousing and related parts.)   Advance Adapters (at 1-800-350-2223) can help clarify the T19 bellhousing pattern and stick-out length for the I-H/BW T19 input shaft.  They have been making adapters for both Jeep and Scout since 1971.

Then there's the prospect of using an adapter bellhousing to mate a Chevy small-block to the T19, which is another Advance Adapters angle.  Or, if you like Ford V-8s, see whether the input stick out length of the T19 is the same as the Ford F-truck version of the T19.  This could open up the prospect of using a Ford small-block 302 or 351W V-8 with the BW T19.  Advance Adapters can help here, too, their catalog is famous for solving these riddles!

Actually, you have a variety of options, and the 258 AMC/Jeep inline six or even an AMC 304, 360, 390 or 401 V-8 would be an option with the correct bellhousing...You'd basically have a "stock" CJ with a swapped-in T19 and the one-year-only Scout version of the Dana 300.  Many 1972-79 Jeep CJ owners value your transfer case for its "Texas" shaped transmission mating pattern, good swap material in place of the Spicer/Dana 20 transfer case.

Next move should be the Advance Adapters' online catalog at www.advanceadapters.com or a phone call to Advance Adapters...

Let's see how this goes.  Get ready for tears of joy!
