  1. Hi, I'm, new here but excited to have found this website! I have owned the "Jeep Owner's Bible" for a long time now and have gotten a lot out of it! I have restored and upgraded a 1983 CJ8 Scrambler in almost all ways, but not the brakes. I use it to tow a #2000 boat, for outdoor expeditions and some off-roading. 32" Duratrac tires on R16" steel wheels. Backseat and Full hardtop. Rebuilt 4.2L with Mopar MPI and 4.0L head conversion. Flanged Axle d20 rear. AX15 trans. Twin stick d300. 2.5" spring lift / 1" body lift. Recently I was driving at night near Moab, with 4 people in the Jeep (no boat). I come around a corner and there was a cow in the road... I nailed the brakes and they did not lock up! We came to a stop about 4' away from hitting the cow, but it didn't feel like we had adequate brakes! With larger than stock tires, and the extra weight of boat, gear and potentially 4 passengers, I want better brakes! Currently the seal on the top of the MC is bad, and I'm losing paint on the inside of the fender. I tested the OEM Booster and it's definitely assisting the pedal, but I don't know how old or good it still is. Here's my plan/questions: (1) It makes sense to start with the friction surfaces (and this is what most people seem to recommend). Get more stopping power without jacking up the pressure, right!? But since my MC needs to be replaced, I figure it's a good time to consider a new booster. (2) For the front I am considering "Stoptech" Kevlar/Aramid composite pads and slotted Cryo-treated rotors. The tech guy at buybrakes.com says I can expect around 20% more stopping power in the front with this setup. (3) For the rear I'm considering swapping the 10" oem drums up to 11" CJ drums. I believe this will create around 10% more stopping power in the rear. I'd also consider composite liners but not sure if anyone makes them. (4) Replacing the rubber brakes hoses with braided SS. Questions: (1) Were the stock oem tires 28" or 29"? (2) Do the 11" drums have larger capacity wheel cylinders than the 10", and if so does this require and change to the Proportioning valve or MC? (3a) If I get 20% more stopping power in the front and 10% more in the rear, does this throw off the ratio for the safest possible braking? (3b) Will the stock Proportioning Valve be OK now that the front and rear no longer have the same ratio of stopping power relative to each other? (4) Is there anyone who sells linings for the rear drum brakes that are high performance composite to match the front? (5) If I upgrade the friction surfaces according to this plan, will the addition of the Dual-diaphragm booster be overkill? Would it make the brakes too touchy? (I also drive on snow and ice). (6) Will doubling the pressure (Dual-diaphragm) be too much for any part of the oem system?
  2. Hi Im installing a new axleshaft and hub I've pressed the bearing on and slid the shaft in but the bearing doesn't seat flush is it supposed to be sticking out a 1/2 inch? I've slid the old one in and it's the same 1/2 inch sticking out does the brake plate suck it in place?
  3. Well, I have gotten the input shaft and front and rear output shafts and the bearing covers together and attached to the case. In trying to check and see how everything is fitting together I attempted to see how the shift rods moved. The rear output rod moves OK but is a little stiff. However the front output rod is almost impossible to move in and out. If I disconnect the front shift fork the rod will move in the case but it is still VERY hard With the front shift fork is disconnected it does not seem to move smoothly along the rod. Is this just an issue of there not being enough lube on the rod, even though the rods were coated with engine assembly lube when put together? Or, could it be a problem with the line up of the interlock plugs? Any suggestions? Rick
  4. I drained the Dana 300 on my '84 CJ-7 and found the bits of metal shown in the attached photo. I also found, not pictured, what looks like half of a plastic sphere about a 1/4 inch in diameter. I have looked at several exploded diagrams of transfer cases and cannot find anything that resembles what I found. Any suggestions as to what these bits are from? Thanks

Vehicle background: 1983 Jeep CJ7 Laredo 4.2 with Hesco MPI kit Westside Performance Valve Cover (thick cast aluminum replica of the stock cover) T-18 four speed Dana 300 Dana 44 axles front and rear (4.27 to 1) 36" Swamper TSLs I bought this Jeep in 2003 odometer had 145,000 miles, now has 170,000, it does not get driven all that often. Plaque on the motor reads "MOPAR Performance", it is a mopar 4.2 crate motor with a remanufacture date of 1998. My estimate is that the motor has ~80,000 miles on it. Issue: Recently failed low speed NOX during my last CA smog test, measured 1,322 and max is 1,066 (fail). High speed NOX readings were measured at 948 and max is 968 (pass). For the last 3 or 4 tests high NOX have been an issue. Before I went to test my jeep I changed the oil, it was a quart low. I removed and cleaned the plugs. The fourth plug from the front had quite a bit of carbon buildup. After the test i decided to do a compression test. Got the Jeep up to operating temp and did my first test dry. Readings from front of motor (water pump) to back were 121, 128, 123, 137, 124, 122. The fourth cylinder had a compression reading about 10% greater than the others. This was the same cylinder that the spark plug with the carbon buildup came from. Next I performed the same test but this time adding two squirts of oil to each cylinder before the compression test. My readings were within 1-2 psi of my dry test. My diagnosis is that the cylinder head needs to be rebuilt. The cylinder head is worn letting excessive blow by enter the combustion chamber through the CCV valve which vents to the number 4 cylinder where the oil is burned. This is why i was a quart low when I changed the oil and why cylinder 4's spark plug was all coked up. Does this sound reasonable? Can i rule out rings in this case? What do you think?   6. Moses, I am starting the Twin Stick Dana 300 rebuild to address the jumping out on down grades issue. This unit had major work about 16K miles ago when a 4:1 gear kit was installed by a pervious owner. The Odometer now has 282K miles and most likely is was a California commuter Jeep in its early days (266K miles 1985 - 2003). This may be an interesting journey. First look don't seem too bad. Clocking Ring and Input Shaft. Clocking Ring Gasket was not salvageable. Not real sure what its function was as it is not a water or oil seal. Input Bearing Unit Removed. Even though I plan on installing a master kit, the input gear/bearing assembly looks and feels so good, I am reluctant to take it apart. Moses, you may have some input on that. Now for the bad news. The front shift fork was binding on the shift rail so tight that it took a couple of hours to separate the two. Once I finally got them apart, my nerves were completely shot and set them both to the side to be inspected maybe tomorrow. Centered in this picture is the rear output gear. On the right half of the rear output gear is the High Range side of the gear showing quite a bit of wear. If I were guessing, this gear is the original with 282K miles. To the right you can see the input gear that is in good shape. Not shown, is the Low Range gear that would normally be to the left in the picture, and it looks as good as the input gear. The sliding collars are most likely original as well. However the wear was not as pronounced as the rear output gear, but still more wear than I would like. Also the collars had been swapped around by the previous builder for the best fit. Even though this Rear Output Gear was not causing trouble, I am not comfortable with it and have ordered a replacement along with 2 shift collars. Had my wife steading the case while I was pressing out the bearings. One of them let go with a good pop and she was sure we had broke something. LOL. Moses, you might want to jump in with this popping out issue. I will pay very close attention during installation to linkage binding. I am already planning on installing the stiffer JB Conversions detent springs. New shift collars can't hurt. Is there any thing about the shift rails you can thing think of? William
  7. First, I'm not sure what I would do without your books. I'm a newbie mechanic restoring my own 82 CJ7. I have your Jeep Rebuilder's Manual and I have searched many forums. The complete MPFI kit came with my 82 CJ. I'm lucky because the kit was worth more than I paid for the entire Jeep. With some help from a mechanic friend the install of the MPFI has been pretty straightforward. I still have some factory wiring issues (what I need to use, what I don't) but I'll go slow and steady and figure out. My question is mainly around what needs to be connected to the charcoal canister that came with the kit and where. The "carb" port is sealed on my canister. So I have a larger vent looking port on the left just like the one below. As this picture shows can I connect vent to fuel tank on this larger port? What connects to the smaller black fitting on the top. Right now my single rail fuel pressure regulator is connected just to manifold vacuum. Do I need to use the split fitting and connect this to the canister as well? I also have a connection that comes from the new air intake that I'm pretty sure goes to the canister. My last question is do I need this line from the kit and and if so, where does it go? I really have searched and found many photos and have your instruction from Jeep Restorers Bible and Mopar MPFI instructions but they only show one end. I'm so new to this I need the connect this to this. Thanks so much! Michael
  8. The power steering gear is the last frontier for my 81-- about everything else has been R&Rd. With low gears, big tires and an ARB up front this OEM part may be on borrowed time. Reading a hummer H1 box is a near exact drop in. Cardone 1 part number. 27-7595, it's a bolt in for the stock CJ P.S. gear it has the larger piston for less effort with a faster turning. This sounds like a mixed bag as for lock to lock ratios. For me, fewer turns the better. It has the right bolt holes and correct o ring couplings. I have done the drill out trick on the pump already. Better performance at low RPM. I see others that simply go with the napa generic unit. rebuilt or new? Agr? Psc? These are spendy. also note the access to CJ box components, hoses, etc very tight. I see some add a coupler mid line for easier servicing, etc. is there a suggested schedule to flush and fresh fill ps fluid? Never thought about that. if a newish box, does it make sense to have it ported for eventual hydro assist? Thanks guys!
  9. Going to swap my old 258 w/ 4.0 head for a 99 model 4.0 in my 84 CJ-8. Already have the mpfi setup, just going to use it along with the TF999 trans. Question is will the flexplate and starter both work on the 99 4.0 engine? I've been told that I need the flexplate that fits the engine and to drill it to fit the trans. torque converter. Just need to know which is correct. Thanks
  10. Good morning all, I recently completed a front and rear differential gear swap on my '83 CJ. This included new carriers with a Spartan Locker up front and an Eaton TruTrac in an AMC20 in back. I went with 4.10 gears, and had the U-joints replaced at a truck driveline shop on both driveshafts at the same time. Now that every thing is reassembled, I'm noticing a rattle or buzz coming from the transfer case shifter about 40 MPH or above. I would describe it as sounding like a bunch of nuts and bolts being shaken in a metal can. It seems most noticeable on acceleration or steady speed. It is absent or significantly reduced under coast or engine braking conditions. I haven't had it that fast in 4WD, so I can only confirm it happens in 2HI. I've heard of various internal issues, as well as possible driveshaft phase concerns as possible causes. I DID have the driveshaft out, but I DIDN'T pull it apart. I can't say for sure that it went back in the same way (could be rotated 90-270 degrees), but the two halves are aligned the same as they were before. I'm not noticing any other symptoms of driveline vibrations, but it's a CJ, so it kind of vibrates all the time. Any idea how to isolate the problem? I'm planning to twin stick the Dana 300, and I'd like to eliminate this rattle first so I'm not chasing a problem with multiple possible sources. I ordered a Dana 300 isolator bushing. That should be an easy fix, but I don't really expect that is the issue, as there was no problem before the gear swap and driveshaft U-joint replacement. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
  11. Hey Moses I am in the process of restoring a 1967 jeep cj5, I have replaced the drum brakes with disc front and back. I now would like to put new wheels and tires on I purchased a AR23 16x8 wheel and slid it onto the front axle all looked ok until I turned the wheel in ward and noticed I would not have enough space for any size tire. It looks like any new tire would rub on the suspension spring. Could you help me with what I am missing? Thanks! Kyle Cj5
  12. Moses, I am pressing forward with the reverse engineering and documentation of my 85 CJ7. I have run into a snag and hope you can shed some light. The front axle has been upgraded to a dana 44. The wheel base appears to be the stock wide track CJ of 56" WMS to WMS. Both Inner axles appear to be custom length (28 7/8" and 15 1/2") 30 spline. Now for the question. The outer axles do not appear to be customized and at first appearance seem to be "CJ" (8.72" 27 Spline) CJ spindle, 6 bolt locking hubs, 6 bolt brake caliper and rotor, and etc, however the outer axles have the larger 1.188" cup size yoke. (5-760X u-joint). Can you identify what vehicle class these outer axles are native too? Through my research, I found a few axles with the larger cup yokes and 27 splines, but I have been unable to positively identify one with the correct length. They are either too long or in most cases do not publish a length. The yoke casting markings are "Spicer", "F36616", and "M5 L866". Google does not hit on these numbers. Any insight you may have will be appreciated. William

() snoopy2x Started conversation: December 10 · Report Moses, I'm now considering the rebuild of a part I'm having a hard time finding a correct replacement for.....the original ignition switch on my 1967 Jeep CJ-5. Mine is starting to get a little "iffy" at times, and I want to address the problem before it gets any worse. NOS ignition Kaiser ignition switches made by Pollak were apparently available until a few years ago...but are unfortunately no more. After researching the switch itself, I found that while the lock cylinder in my original switch has a keyway designed to fit a Briggs & Stratton key, the switch itself was made by Pollak. As you may know, Pollak is still in business, and still produces ignition switches. Thinking that I might be able to simply take the original lock cylinder and install it in one of their currently made switches, I contacted them with photos of my original switch just to see if they currently make a switch that would allow me to use that original lock cylinder. I would very much like to do this, since I have and still use the original 1967 Jeep logo (B&S) keys that came with the jeep when it was new. However, it doesn't appear that any of the current ignition switches Pollak makes, though they are externally very similar to mine, will work with my original lock cylinder - as all of the new switches that would fit the CJ appear to have a shorter lock cylinder tube length than mine. Both the original and currently made switches have diecast housings that are crimped over the thermoplastic(?) end caps securing the threaded copper stud connectors. As I say, except for the length of the lock cylinder "tube" portion of the diecast housing, many of the new Pollak switches look almost identical to the 50 year old original one in my jeep. If you're willing to take it apart with your usual great step-by photos, we can likely help out others. These switches and rebuilding one could reach a lot of restorers. The type of switch and Pollak switches in general are similar to tractor or off-highway equipment applications, and that should be topical. I can see this switch being used by I-H, Studebaker and other brands outside the Big Three. In fact, I-H or Studebaker might be identical to Willys/Kaiser in some application(s). When you're ready to tie up that Jeep CJ for a bit, let's see what's in store. I'm always glad to make suggestions related to mechanical restoration work. Footnote: The eBay offerings hint that G.M. may have also outsourced Pollak, I'd be surprised, most G.M. electrical is Delco or Delco-Remy. Possible that Pollak made replacement parts for G.M. vehicles. There may be a history here of vehicle "classes" that use these Pollak switches. They all have an "industrial/truck/equipment" look, suggesting that big rigs, agricultural vehicles and more spartan light trucks shared these common Pollak type switches...Also, it would be my guess that any of these Pollak 4-pole switches have common back-end guts. The defining feature appears to be the length of the lock cylinder necks. Your thoughts here? Maybe there's a simple series crossover that would help locate a replacement switch assembly that would accept your Jeep cylinder. Can we find a Pollak catalog with descriptions and illustrations of the switch profiles? I have other ideas for cross referencing... You are correct about the wide usage of the Pollak ignition switches....they were/are used in a great number of different vehicles, including older cars & trucks,18-wheelers, forklifts, backhoes, etc. Thanks, Moses! Many were tilt and similar to G.M. applications. The keys did look "G.M."-ish...Those columns were also locking type, the key cylinders and mechanisms were different than the ones depicted at eBay. The eBay/Pollack switches look like older generation types that fit behind a dashboard, mating to a flat surface... Unless you think there's a different model I should purchase, I'm considering buying one of the GM-type switches I sent you the link to, and using that as the "donor switch". This assumes of course that this idea plays out as I anticipate it might, and the new internal parts are indeed usable in the 50-year old original housing. That would just be too cool..... However, if that doesn't work out, i.e. it turns out that I can't use the innards from the new switch in the old original switch's housing, then at least I haven't wasted a great deal of money. Speaking of which, I want to be as ready as possible for any eventuality. Especially if I can't use the internal parts from a new switch, I need to be ready to clean and re-use the electrical contacts of the old switch, and in either case, I will need to lubricate the moving parts. Toward those ends, what type of 1) electrical cleaner; 2) lubricant(s); and 3) anything else I might need would you recommend that I pick up so that I'm as prepared as possible once I get the new parts in hand and am ready to begin surgery? My guess is that I may be able to do it all in a single day, and maybe even just a few hours, assuming that I don't need to find any more parts, etc. once I start work on it. I'm taking a couple of weeks off of work for the Holidays starting next weekend, and though visiting family, etc will occupy some of those days, I am thinking that it would also be an ideal time frame during which to rebuild the switch. On P. 30 is the 31-180 switch image that resembles your switch. Since you have the old switch out and can take measurements, I would contact Pollack and ask if your key cylinder will fit this new switch or another in their inventory. It would be much easier to swap cylinders than rebuild a switch. Another option would be Pollack's ability to match/key a new switch and cylinder to accept your OE key(s). That way you would have your OE key and a brand new switch. If that fails, we're back to rebuilding or repair of your OE switch, which is always an option. I emailed Pollak a few days ago with the same photos of the original switch I sent to you, and asked that very question.....below is a copy of that (very short) email string, in which the Pollak rep sent me the catalog I sent you. (It did not occur to me to ask them about creating a new lock cylinder with the old B&S keyway.....I would be very surprised though if that could be done cost-effectively, if it could be done at all.) My note to Jerry at Pollak: PS - I will email the Pollak rep again tomorrow, and ask if they could provide or create a lock cylinder that would have the 1940s-60s B&S keyway used in jeeps. I would be pretty surprised if they would or could, as I say - but it would not be the first time that has happened! Find out how to release the lock cylinder without damaging anything...For example, is the key cylinder installed from the backside during the switch assembly at the factory? Know what you're doing here. Pollak should at least be able to explain how the cylinder goes into the switch body...The catalog cutaway drawings help some but are not detailed around this issue. The more new parts you can use, the better. How about a new or NOS switch with a B&S type key application, the complete switch with key. Get a new/NOS Jeep key blank and cut it to match the B&S key that comes with the new or NOS complete switch. Bobcat may be the simplest approach if the dimensions are correct. Buy a Bobcat switch if it takes a B&S blank similar to Jeep. Cut a new key from an NOS Jeep blank...Easier? The same thought had occurred to me re. finding another NOS IH switch that shares the same B&S keyway with the Kaiser jeeps, and using that intact....but I suspect that will be easier said than done, and may take years to find. I'll put it on my eBay search list, though, and we'll see if one pops up. Alternatively, maybe I'll get lucky and find another new or NOS Pollak switch that will accept my lock cylinder. I bought an old used, cheap ($10) Pollak switch on eBay that looks pretty similar to mine, just to experiment a bit and see how hard it would be to disassemble. That way if I end up breaking it beyond repair, it won't matter, and if I'm able to disassemble, clean, and reassemble it, it will give me good practice if it comes to trying to rebuild mine. I will take pictures once I actually have the old switch in hand, and hopefully get it apart successfully, and if you think it is worthwhile, I will start a thread as you described (either on rebuilding the practice switch, and/or the original switch from my CJ). The lock cylinder is a single piece about 1-1/2" long, so I will definitely not be able to use it in one of the shorter switch housings. If they use a "grease" but not dielectric, and if this is more a mechanical lube than an electrical parts grease, there is the option of Bosch distributor and bearing grease, which is also a mainstay in my tool box: This is Bosch part # 5700002005, which has been used on ignition breaker point cams and mechanical parts for decades. I had a tube in the early 1970s that lasted until I bought a newer tube within the last few years. This is not for electrical contacts but rather for an anti-friction barrier on moving parts (centrifugal weights, remote gear mechanisms, etc.). I use this on mechanisms where a true grease is needed that won't create too much drag or suffer from wide temperature swings. Bosch wiper motors and similar mechanisms would be examples. I largely struck out, but one of them finally wrote me back this week, a guy named Joe Dickhudt who is also a professor at McPherson College in their Automotive Restoration degree program. I had no idea prior to contacting him that such a program even existed. Joe referred me to one of his former students named Scott Versaw, who evidently has done a good deal of electrical restoration work. Below is a greatly abbreviated out-take from my fairly lengthy communication with Scott, who is at least somewhat interested in trying to rebuild the switch, though he freely admits that he has no experience doing so on ignition switches per se. In fact, he was quick to encourage me, just as you did, to consider finding an NOS switch or a new switch that I could transfer the original lock cylinder into, rather than to attempt restoring my original switch. In the course of our conversation, I asked him about the cleaners and lubes he uses in his switch and other electrical restoration efforts, and that exchange raised another possibility that I think may just be worth a try....have you ever heard of a product line called Deoxit? (see the part I underlined below): Maury, I do not have experience disassembling or rebuilding Pollack switches, or any ignition switches. I've taken apart and rebuilt radio switches that integrate volume and tone control, and also windshield wiper switches, both of which were never intended to be taken apart. Like Joe Dickhudt, I'm merely interested in making old things new again (especially electrical items), somewhat adept at working with small items, solving problems, and have above-average patience..... By the way, I graduated from McPherson College in 2015 with a Bachelors Degree in Auto Restoration. Joe was one of my professors. I was what was considered a "non-traditional" student, and in fact I think I was the most non-traditional student in the Auto restoration program. Hint: I started collecting Social Security before I graduated. If you find someone who is experienced with rebuilding Pollak switches, or any ignition switches, I would not be disappointed at all if you used them as your vendor. As long as you let me know if it was successful! Scott Scott, thinking about all of this has me wondering....what cleaners would be the best to use on electrical contacts in old switches? Just as importantly, what lubes have you found do the best job in old switches?.....dielectric grease, PTFE spray, graphite, or something else? Maury Maury, Isopropyl alchohol ([preferrably at least 90% alcohol), available in drug stores, is the best general cleaner for switches. If you need to clean inside of a closed switch through tiny holes, though, you'll need a spray can of electronic cleaner. Spray cans of electronic cleaner are available -- and cheapest -- at auto parts stores. I use acid brushes, available at Amazon, and alcohol (not acid!) for most of the cleaning I do on radios. Dieletric grease will both lubricate and seal out oxygen, so I like it best. You can't really get it inside a closed switch without taking it apart, though. The real secret sauce for cleaning and lubricating closed switches is DeoxIt. Just search for it on Amazon. Available in spray cans or tubes or bottles. You can even buy DeoxIt Gold. It has to be better than plain ol' red, otherwise they wouldn't charge more for it...right?... Scott, Thank you.....you are a true fount of great information! It occurs to me that before I further consider rebuilding the switch, I should probably try spraying Deoxit into the housing through the lock cylinder tube (with the cyl removed) while working the switch back and forth. Apparently, the copper alloy studs in the Pollak switch bases are actually carriage bolts. the heads of which serve as the main contacts. These tend to arc over time, and gradually lose their conductivity as a result. Maybe Deoxit would help clean them off, and lube the switch as well. Getting back to our conversation, Moses....I looked it up on Amazon, and learned that the Deoxit products have been around for nearly 30 years, and evidently have quite a stellar reputation. They make separate (evaporating) cleaners and heavy duty lubricants specifically designed for electronics which are intended to be used in sequence. The reviews of their products are really pretty astounding....relating specifically, among other things, to restoring ignition switch function (particularly in motorcycles, which I'm sure must be eternally problematic, given the environmental conditions they have to endure). I think it would be worthwhile to try their heavy-duty cleaner and lubricant formulas in spray form on my original 1967 ignition switch, just to see what happens, before I try actually disassembllng it (and potentially messing it up somehow beyond my ability to successfully reassemble it). If the Deoxit treatment succeeds in "fixing" the somewhat intermittent contact problems the switch has for the time being, that would buy me some time to find an NOS Kaiser Jeep or International ignition switch that I could eventually replace the original with altogether. If it doesn't work, I can always resort to Plan A, and attempt a rebuild of the original switch, possibly using some or all of the parts from a new Pollak switch. In any case, an inexpensive new Pollak ignition switch I found on eBay is on the way. No matter what happens with the Deoxit treatment on my original switch, I still plan to take the one I bought on eBay apart, just to see how it works, and to evaluate the difficulty of disassembly and reassembly. It could also possibly supply some parts if Plan A is ultimately implemented. I would be glad to photograph everything, and start a new thread covering all the above. I would be concerned about spraying or soaking with Deoxit then trying to fully lubricate a closed switch. You need to be sure all old grease is washed out with no Deoxit residue remaining...Short of disassembling the switch, you could then pressurize the lube operation with a pinpoint grease gun attachment to assure a full fill of the cavity and reaching all contact points. All of this assumes there is an existing opening, or a seal lip at the base of the cylinder that will flatten, to squeeze the grease through—without damaging any seal(s). Review the cutaway drawings in the catalog to see how the sealing works. Dielectric grease is thinner and would fill a closed cavity effectively. We're still not clear whether the OE grease is dielectric or simply a good lubricant. If the latter, and if conductivity is not an issue with the grease, the Bosch grease would be an alternative to dielectric grease. Either grease would likely serve here, though dielectric grease is really an insulation barrier and used for better electrical conductivity in oxidative and corrosive environments, not a true anti-friction lubricant. Knowing whether the grease inside is just a petroleum base, with maybe a moly or lithium additive, would be helpful. Pollak might be magnanimous enough to share what grease type they use in these switches today. This information shouldn't be "proprietary". Moses Quote Edit Options () snoopy2x Replied: Saturday at 02:55 PM · Report One piece of good news is that I think the base of the Nash switch, and the way the diecast housing is crimped around it, is identical to that of my original (but I won't know with absolute certainty until I can disconnect the wires from my original switch)....so the internal parts of these two switches may likewise be identical. The way the bases are attached to the housings in the switches Pollak makes today, which I would describe as a very tight, full-circle crimp, could and probably would make it difficult at best to remove the base from the housing without damaging one or both. In these older 1960's Pollak switches, though, it appears that there may be some slight, narrow gaps between the housing and base in between the "spot crimps". If these are indeed gaps, it looks like lubricant / dielectric grease could possibly be sprayed or injected through them into the internal workings of the switch. More to the point, it looks to me like it might just be possible to take these old switches apart, i.e. carefully bend the crimped areas back to remove the base from the housing, without damaging either the housing or base beyond repair.....which has been my one big fear about trying that. This could allow me (after getting a second NOS Rambler switch) to swap the NOS base and other internal parts, if they are indeed identical, into the my original switch's housing, and use it with my original long lock cylinder. In that case, I would use the new NOS switch as my ignition switch, and keep the rebuilt original as a backup. What are your thoughts, Moses? I look forward to hearing them! See what you turn up with RHEOLUBE 363 first, if you strike out, I'm sure you can get the Bosch grease. Try a VW or Porsche dealership, or a Bosch distributor warehouse in your area, with the part number. Very common, though it might be very expensive by now. I would not be concerned about finding a grease that meets these specs if you decide to "rebuild" or refresh a switch assembly. Better to get something more common. Rheolube-Nye Lubricants sound like commercial greases for industry and manufacturing. The consistency of Rheolube 363 grease must be attractive to Pollak; given the application, they would not want it oozing from the cylinder or base of the switch. That's a consideration. Would be good to know the viscosity of Rheolube 363...Temperature range is not a major concern for a key switch, and that looks good, anyway. This would be somewhat akin to using the Penrite lube on the Ross steering gear rebuild as I did....i.e. not going with the original type of lubricant that was used, but trying a more modern alternative lube instead. I'm basing this approach on what Scott Versaw (the vintage electrical part restorer I sent you some email clips from last week) indicated in his messages. As you may recall, Scott described the Deoxit products as being the "secret sauce" for closed switches. I'm also thinking of going this way due to the fairly glowing Amazon and other website reviewers' assessments of these particular products. I know of course that I'm vacillating here.....but reconsidering the possibility of opening up these switches, I will say that at least the crimps don't appear that they'd be very difficult to "uncrimp"....and looking at it up close, it appears that re-crimping could possibly be accomplished simply using channel-lock pliers spread open a bit. Hmmm...do you think epoxy could be used to reinforce the (re-) crimped indented points? If so, that could make the possibility of a true rebuild of the original switch more viable. Besides satisfying my curiosity (I had actually started dreaming about taking one of these things apart), I realized that disassembling one would also give me the necessary NOS parts to rebuild my original switch eventually if need be. I may or may not actually rebuild that switch in the near future, depending on whether or not the Deoxit cleaning & lubing process fixes the intermittent continuity issues on the "accessory" contact it was experiencing. But now I have the parts in hand to rebuild it if I ever do need to. The switch was, as expected, fairly easy to take apart. I used a small screwdriver rotating slowly back and forth between the housing and the base, using very light pressure to slowly work each of the six crimps outwards: I had to work my way around the switch several times in order to open all of them enough, but eventually the base could be lifted out: The rotating assembly came out as one piece. I'm sure you can already intuitively understand from the photos exactly how it works: Keep in mind that I had "cleaned" this switch with Deoxit D5 Cleaner prior to taking it apart. As you can see, the results were somewhat mixed. While the copper contacts themselves do appear to be pretty clean - that being Deoxit's primary job - there is still a good deal of old grease inside the switch, which appears to have been partially dissolved by the Deoxit. Seeing this, I am a bit ambivalent as to the best way to move forward. Should I just use the un-opened NOS Rambler switch that's coming as-is, i.e. without trying to clean it with Deoxit first? Would that original old grease still be viable after 50+ years? No details on whether it's a lithium or other base nor whether this product is intended for lubricating ignition (i.e., mechanical) switch mechanisms. Talk of audio/video quality hints that the product is used around switches like faders or electronic controls. Not specific about its ability to handle an industrial strength Pollak ignition switch mechanism. Pollak uses a lithium base grease, which is the kind of protection you would use at chassis joints or in higher friction mechanisms. This doesn't mean that the Shield S stuff is an insufficient lubricant, but you should contact Caig and ask. Explain the "carriage bolt head" contact points, they're entirely different than a sound system's rotary switch. Epoxy is always limiting and not the same tensile as metal crimping. I would use a two-part plastic epoxy to fill gaps in the Bakelite at the edges or possibly to fill a drilled hole in the plastic if you have to create a hole for lubrication. Glad you have an NOS switch body and lock cylinder as a backup. This makes a repair of the OEM switch less critical and opens the prospect of experimentation if you're so inclined. Carefully clean diluted OE grease from all parts, allow alcohol to evaporate before you re-grease. I researched and found this article on switch grease. Root information is from Nye Lubricants (i.e., RHEOLUBE-Nye). Read it thorough and find a suitable grease: http://machinedesign.com/archive/lubricating-electrical-switches As for crimping back together, after thoroughly greasing the parts, use the original crimp points very carefully. Then add three new, evenly spaced crimps, 120-degrees apart, for backup. If you need to make a cosmetic repair of the original crimps, a Dremel tool and carbide bit can remove burrs. I've cosmetically restored this kind of metal with low melting point silver solder. Not high tensile, this would be more for looks than reinforcement. Note that higher melting point silver brazing rod would be wrong, subjecting this pot metal to too much heat. Higher heat, even 800-1100 degrees F, would turn pot metal into a puddle. We're talking low melting point silver solder with typically 300 degree F melting point, used for minor jewelry fixes and very light (low-tensile) repairs. If you don't care about the switch's appearance behind the dash, simply clean, de-burr, grease thoroughly and re-crimp, then add the three new crimps. (Index the Bakelite end piece at the notch/tang before crimping!) Epoxy (two-part plastic type) is not strong but would seal the edge if you think there is a gap for grease to ooz out. Epoxy would not be a crimping alternative. If you're not satisfied with the results and wind up using another NOS switch, as long as the switch shows no oxidation or signs of storage in a humid or wet environment, I would install the switch as is.   14. Driving along our local Main Street, I came upon this 1979 AMC era Jeep CJ-5 for sale. As advertised by the seller, this vehicle has undergone extensive work and restorative effort...Price wise, it's evident that the market for vintage Jeep iron has heated up! Before considering the sticker shock price, note that this Jeep has a new steel tub and a variety of restorative parts. Worth commenting, it still needs work, and a 1979 model has its pros and cons. First off, this is near the end of the somewhat brief (1972-80, 1980 V-8 applications seem rare) 304 V-8 option era. By 1981, CJs were either 4-banger or inline six equipped. The 1979 CJ has a rugged Spicer 20 transfer case; this is through-drive but lacks the better helically cut gears found in 1980-up CJs. The Spicer 20 also has a less desirable and taller low range ratio. Despite any fretting over details, this vehicle sends a joyful message to CJ owners: The market is alive and well, along with price hikes! Note: I did not go over this vehicle with a fine-toothed comb nor did I locate the owner and have him run it. It's unclear what condition the vehicle is, and we can only go by the advertised for sale signs on the windshield. Did not confirm whether the vehicle sold and if so, can't say what this Jeep actually sold for.

Hi Moses ive had a seal blow out in the steering box i have no idea why but ill give it all a good clean & polish the shaft & replace the seals while i was at it i got carried away & pulled the engine out to put the 4.6 stroker ive had sitting in the corner of the shed in it so i took some pics of the empty engine bay to show you notice that the front 1/2 of the chasis is boxed back to the back end of the gear box i bought an xj the other day it was only $1000 & came with a dead 1 for parts but it gets hot on the beach but is ok on the road cheers ian

  17. Getting my 225 back together, not rebuilt, I just took it apart to look things over. Question I have is how difficult should my oil pump turn. I did put in a melling high volume kit a couple years ago, I just don't remember what it felt like. I wanted to confirm oil flow so I rigged up a priming tool, one handed is somewhat hard. I put it on my drill motor and it really makes the drill work to turn it. Definitely pumps oil (all the way across my garage) just a little concerned with the pump. Any thoughts?

  19. Ok, here is my situation. i am new to the the jeep owners world. I have wanted a cj since I was 13 yrs old and I finally got one about 2 months ago. I bought an 85 cj7, it has a 2.5 l 4 cyl with a t4 transmission. I bought it with the expectation of putting in a different motor and trans, however, what I did not count on was how much body work I would end up having to do. The body work has taken a huge chunk out of my budget for the motor. A buddy of mine gave me a 4.0 out of his 88 comanche. the engine ran but had been sitting for 7 yrs and all of the seals leaked, including the main seal. My original plan was to use this motor and carburate it since I don't have all of the parts for the fuel injection and I want to keep it as simple under the hood as possible. My question is, would this be possible and could i use the existing motor mounts. Also, what else would I have to do to make this work? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
  20. As part of my rear disc brake conversion, I bought an external 2psi residual valve from Wilwood. My plan was to remove the stock drum residual valve from the master cylinder and use the inline valve, but I just realized something: 1. My aftermarket disc/drum master cylinder has left and right outlets, two for the front line and two for the back. I guess the idea was to give options for left or right brake line outlets if space was tight. I have one port on each half of the MC plugged. If I'm not mistaken, that means that I have two drum residual valves (10psi) and two disc residual valves (2psi) already in the MC. 2. Could I just pull the unused 2psi valve out of the plugged port for the front MC pot and swap it into the back port where I now need another 2 psi valve? It seems like this would accomplish the same as the external valve and would save me from making two more flares that will probably leak. Any thoughts are appreciated.

  22. Since the early 'sixties era of closed crankcase devices and the later carbureted engine emission controls era, owners have wondered whether to restore or eliminate devices. Aside from the legality issues, there are times when these devices have either little negative effect or may even provide some benefits. For those unaware, my answer to a Jeep CJ-7 owner's emissions modifications may help. I'd also add that Jeep pioneered the closed crankcase on the MB WWII model, and this equivalent to a PCV system eliminated the common road draft tube. An open road draft tube would have swamped these 134 L-head crankcases during stream crossings and beach landings. Often, emissions devices are neither bad nor detrimental to performance. In fact, they can even have positive effects as noted in my comments above... Moses
  23. I have a cj7 that I am going install an AMC 360 with Howell injection, mild cam, and a little head work. My question is how well will the Borg warner t5 held up? Bad idea? Or is swapping to a np435 or nv4500 mandatory?
  24. Well, progress has been slow due to work and family, but I spent a solid 6 hours on the CJ-7 project last night. I bought a new clutch linkage kit, as my lower and upper clutch rods were worn half way through, and the bellcrank was a mess. The new kit has an adjustable lower linkage rod with a ball joint instead of the old bent solid rod. And.....cue swearing. The 4.0 swap exhaust routing must be slightly different from stock (it's some kind of welded header instead of a cast iron manifold) because the ball and socket joint whacks the exhaust down tube solidly when the clutch pedal comes back to rest. After adjusting things for about an hour and trying the lower rod backwards, I conceded that it wasn't going to work and ordered a set of heim joint linkage rods to go with my nice new bellcrank and bushings. I have to say, the stock setup is a pretty questionable system. I guess maybe it gets points for simplicity, but for stoutness it is lacking. I know lots of folks have difficulty with the release lever jumping off the clutch fork, I wonder if there is a way to modify that to accept a ball and socket end for a positive mount instead of the old spring tension junk...
