We purchased the XJ Cherokee intent on building a street/trail prototype as a magazine project. Big tires with a stock body, without the need to cut sheet metal or install aftermarket flares, influenced our choice of a Full-Traction 6-inch long arm suspension package.

The Full-Traction chassis lift provided space for 33" diameter tires. It also gave us much better arc of radius for front axle caster control over the long range of suspension travel. No "death wobble", and our 1999 Jeep XJ Cherokee delivers superior handling, great off-road ground clearance and durability.

For the gear works, we chose Superior Axle's axle shafts and 4.10 gears, Advance Adapters' SYE kit for a CV rear driveline, and we fitted ARB Air Lockers at both axles.

We turned to Warn for the 9000# front winch and mounted it to an ARB bumper. Warn's spare tire mount rear bumper completed the "armor". Tires are BFGoodrich All-Terrain K/O—versatile and very accommodating—both on- and off-highway!

The overall package delivers as promised, this is a highly flexible street and trail use 4x4 that will last a very long time. We've racked up 50K miles on this equipment already (total of 144K on the odometer), and the 4.0L engine still refuses to use oil.

We did pump up the engine cooling with a prototype Griffin Radiator and twin Spal fans, good for twice the factory horsepower rating. This has surely enhanced the longevity of both the 4.0L inline six and the AW4 automatic transmission, especially with air conditioning and power steering.

Future plans? Maybe a 4.6L stroker long block build of the 4.0L engine, definitely a pair of Bestop front seats soon, likely some light cosmetic freshening, a mild sound system and an interior roll cage...You'll find details about all this work at the magazine site!—Moses Ludel
