  • Description We purchased the Dodge Ram new in October 2004 and kept this highly maneuverable and versatile 140.5" wheelbase truck in stone stock form until 2008 when we upgraded the vehicle as a magazine project with a Mopar lift, BFG oversized tires, heavy duty bumpers, a Warn M12000 winch and Transfer Flow auxiliary fuel tank. The truck draws attention wherever we go, at trade shows and the Moab Jeep Safari. It enjoyed status as a feature vehicle at the BFG booth, 2011 Lucas Oil Off-Road Expo.

This has been among our most enjoyable and efficient trucks ever. The choice of a Cummins 5.9L HO turbo-diesel was spot on, opting for the 3500 over a 2500 proved very wise, too. Though only a smaller percentage of our use has been towing and hauling, the truck's trailer towing ability is ideal. We have more trailering planned and know the truck will handle these chores while delivering top fuel efficiency. 16 mpg with a 7,500# trailer at 65 mph is the goal.

We purposely went with the Quad Cab for flexible seating. The rear seating has accommodated family members over 6-feet tall for long trips, proving much better than an "extended cab". Four doors make entry and exit easy, especially with Mopar power running boards!

The shortest wheelbase available for a Quad Cab is our 140.5". We gave up bed length (opting for our shorter 6.3-foot bed) in favor of handling and maneuverability. With a single rear wheel (SRW) axle and factory limited slip, this truck delivers 4x4 traction and stability. If we were using a cabover camper or a fifth wheel trailer, we would considered a dually 4x4. I prefer pulling a conventional trailer, and SRW works very well here, much easier to maneuver.

Overall, this truck has met our needs, and the necessary upgrades and improvements over stock are well documented at the magazine. Highest points go to the Cummins engine, traditional beam AAM axles with link-and-coil front suspension, rugged rear leaf springs, a tough ladder frame, electronic transfer case engagement and solid construction.

The Dodge Ram is incredibly comfortable on long trips and has an excellent sound system. Seats are well-engineered, and we're pleased with the truck's ease of serviceability and the dependable performance. Given the Cummins ISB engine's history, this should be a 1/2-million mile truck in our stable...Moses Ludel
